Scar the Martyr will feature Jordison’s drumming and bass playing on every song, as well as rhythm guitar work on all tracks but two.  He also wrote all of the songs, along with lead vocalist Henry Derek.  Everyone else?  How about Chris Vrenna of Nine Inch Nails on keys, along with Jed Simon of Strapping Young Lad and Kris Norris of Darkest Hour contributing their lead guitar virtuosity.  Now THAT is an impressive lineup.  The record itself will be pure rock, featuring “elements of post-punk and industrial music.”  Jordison expressed his confidence in his new style of songwriting:

With this project, I focused my efforts on writing for the better of the song…I wasn’t worried about flash or persona… It’s all about writing a good solid song. I’m writing music that people can grasp and hold on to…something that resonates. If you don’t have that, then you have nothing.

Amen!  The album was recorded at Sound Farm Studios in Des Moines, IA, and is yet to be titled.  Is it too soon to name it F**KIN AWESOME?

While everyone was wondering about Sheeran and serial celeb dater Taylor Swift after they collaborated on “Everything Has Changed,” Swift was reportedly introducing the red-headed romancer to her good pal, Gomez.  The introduction must have gone over well, because Sheeran was recently spotted leaving Gomez’s house, guitar in hand.  Could there be a collab on the way?  Maybe he just knew that even a starlet like Selena couldn’t resist his musical charms.

We have our fingers crossed for this pairing, mostly because we’d like to see Gomez with someone who isn’t a complete dou–, uh, nuisance.  Plus, we think the two would be strangely (and absolutely) adorable together.  Am I getting too imaginative?  I don’t think I’ve crossed the line yet, considering I can’t come up with a better couple name than Edlena.

Anyway, Ed, if this is all just a made up rumor, it’s time to make it a reality.

Aaand that’s how we ended up with a video featuring smoke-shooting crotches and strutting with stuffed animals (some of which were alive at one point).  And obviously some girl-on-girl wrestling/grabbing.

I know, Lucille, I know.

Cyrus pops in her golden grills and sensually humps her white duvet so we know she’s ready to party, as friends eat money sandwiches and slice off their fingers in what I hope was supposed to be an excessively fake stunt, pink paint blood aside.  Twerking is never absent for too long, whether it’s appearing in alphabet soup, or in one of the 82375 shots we are given of Miley’s ass (in case we forgot she had one or something).  She also sticks her tongue out at us when it’s not being stuck down the throat of a doll.  What a rebel!  Hannah Montana, who?

PEOPLE DON’T FORGET.

The most confusing part of it all for me is that the song itself is just not that exciting.  A video like this should be accompanied by a real club banger, and “We Can’t Stop” is anything but that.  Anyway, I’m clearly not impressed with Miley’s try-hard antics or attitude, but it’s not like she can stop, you know?  Plus, I don’t think she wants to.

As I stepped inside the venue, I stepped into 2003.  I glanced to my left to see a guy wearing a cadet hat, a long sleeve shirt under his short sleeve band tee, and loose fitting jeans leading down to Converse Chuck Taylors.  I wondered for five minutes or so whether the outfit had been a planned homage to the old scene as opener Jon Walker played through a cover of Saves The Day’s “Freakish” from 2001’s Stay What You Are.  Shane Henderson and The Future Perfect continued the show with a decent set from what sounded like a watered down Valencia (even when he threw a Valencia cover in).  The crowd gathered toward the stage and every ball of energy ever exerted from a pop punk jump in the early 2000’s buzzed around our heads as we discussed which songs we were the most excited to hear live from the headliner, and what we thought they would sound like after so many years.

Spitalfield took the stage and both the band and fans became fully immersed in the past as it became our present.  With the opening riff of album opener, “Those Days You Felt Alive,” we remembered a time when pop punk wasn’t all about violent finger pointing and emo wasn’t only about crying (not that both aren’t fully appreciated in modern music).  Everyone smiled and sang along with/to friends and strangers, bouncing around and dancing (extra intensely when fan favorite “I Loved The Way She Said L.A.” was played).

The members of Spitalfield expressed their appreciation for the long-time fans and ensured us how much they were enjoying themselves with old stories and perma-plastered grins.  The momentary doubts I shared with a friend about the possibility of a sloppy set or an outwardly apathetic audience were long-erased with the decade old songs sounding as tight as ever and no reservations in sight.

The band finished their main set with the bouncy “Make My Heart Attack,” left the stage, and returned after the inevitable “one more song” chants.  They played through a few extras, including “Gold Dust Vs. State of Illinois,” a Texas Is The Reason cover, and their closer, “Texa$ With a Dollar Sign.”

I can honestly say that the show was the most fun I’ve had in a while, and I’ve had the album on repeat since.  If I needed a reminder to “remember right now,” that was it, and I won’t forget.

BSB released their brand new song, “In A World Like This,” today, which is the title track off their upcoming eighth studio album.  The guys “couldn’t wait” any longer to premiere it, so here we are!  I’ll get straight to my thesis: it’s alright.  The acoustic guitar introduction intrigued me, but when the beat “dropped” (it’s not that serious) it revealed itself as yet another predictable pop tune.  Of course, the pop part was to be expected, but I was blindly hoping for some excitement thrown in there from some of the most well known boy banders ever.  The word “salvation” then popped up in the first verse, and I immediately recognized just how “Christian band” the whole thing sounded, even with lyrics aside.  I’m sort of doubting that being the goal.

The phrase “free fallin'” also made a few appearances throughout the song, which is now and forever associated with the Tom Petty song.  Instead of feeling like a thoughtful homage, I just sort of thought, “why?”  I was also a little distracted by the excessive use of autotune.  Come on, boys, we know you can sing, at least go easy on the effects.

Again, the song is alright.  I am being judgmental, but that’s why I’m here.  I guess that I was hoping for more from writer/producer Max Martin, who also worked with the Backstreet Boys on mega-hits including “I Want It That Way” and “Quit Playin’ Games (With My Heart).”  But, hey, this is only one song.  I know I’m still excited for the record’s release on July 30 to see what else BSB has in store for us…are you?

1. TAMPONS (or whatever you prefer): Yeah, I’m going straight here, but for good reason.  Chances are, you’re going to be at that festival all day and night, and that means at least one trip to the porta potty.  This is one place you do NOT want to be unprepared.  Even if it’s not your time of the month, I can almost guarantee you that it’ll be someone else’s and she will be begging the line for help.  Help a fellow music loving gal out, it’ll create a better experience for all of us.  Tampax Pearl is the way to go.  Oh, and Midol couldn’t hurt either.

2. LIP BALM.  Long, hot, and dry days in the sun will have your lips shriveling up faster than you’d imagine.  When you’ve run out of money for overpriced water, it’s best to keep those smoochers hydrated with some balm!  When you finally squeeze your way into the front row, you’ll be all smiles when your favorite singer makes eye contact with you.  Smith’s Rosebud Salve is a godsend!

3. FACE TOWELETTES.  Festivals are dirty.  Like, really dirty.  It’s fun to embrace the grime, and you sort of need to in order to have any fun at all, but that doesn’t mean you need a mud mask.  A pack of face towelettes will help refresh you and your skin.  It’s best to go minimal with makeup anyway, so you shouldn’t have to worry about wiping off a layer of face.  Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes are gentle, yet effective, and I highly recommend sticking some in your bag.

4. WATERPROOF MASCARA.  I know, I just said to go minimal with makeup, but I didn’t say you had to go completely bare!  If you’re comfortable with a blank canvas, more power to you, but I know most ladies need at least a little paint to feel comfortable.  Waterproof mascara can be a pain for daily wear, but for festivals, it’s definitely an essential.  We’re going to keep it drugstore price-friendly here with Maybelline’s Volum’Express Waterproof Mascara, which will keep the raccoon eyes away and give you a fierce gaze.  Falsies is my fave!

5. A GOOD BRA (or bikini top):  Festivals = lots of dancing, jumping, slipping, and sliding.  You don’t want to be held back for fear of too much jiggle or a wardrobe malfunction!  A sturdy bra is absolutely vital to a flaw-free festival experience.  You may also choose to wear a bikini top (there is a decent chance you will get sprayed with a hose at some point), and in that case, make sure your ties are tight!  Bra-wise, Playtex Secrets Perfect Flex Underwire Bra is a great choice.  It’s comfortable without sacrificing shape or low-cut tops, and perfect for your next fest.

6. HAIR TIES: It might be seem obvious, but if extra hair ties aren’t on your checklist, you’ll be sorry later on.  You may lose your morals in a big crowd, but you definitely do not want to lose your one and only hair tie.  Keep an extra few in your bag or back pocket, your neck (or your friends) will thank you later.  I swear by Scünci No Damage hair ties.

7. DRY SHAMPOO:  This one’s especially important if you’re going to a festival like Bonnaroo (which ended yesterday, but next year you’ll be ready), where you may be camping out for a few days.  If you’re not going to have access to a shower, dry shampoo will keep the bounce in your locks and the grease to a minimum.  Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo not only works great, but it smells amazing too.

8. COMFORTABLE SHOES:  Strappy sandals are cute, but they’re not going to be so cute with broken and bloody toes.  Unless you’re planning on picnicking the whole time with your $9 nachos, you’re going to need a good pair of sneakers (or boots) to get by.  You don’t have to wear clunky mom shoes; Vans Lo Pros are sleek and don’t even need any breaking in.  They also come in, like, a bazillion different colors and styles.

9. CHANGE PURSE:  You’re probably going to need something to carry all of the mini must-haves with you, and a change purse is the easiest way to go.  You can fold up your bills and stick them right next to your tampons, hair ties, and whatever download cards you pick up throughout the day.  Might as well go with Blue Q’s cat butts one (though there are plenty of other designs too, I GUESS).

10. DISPOSABLE CAMERA:  You don’t want to have your expensive digital camera knocked out of your hand when a mosh pit suddenly opens up next to you and limbs start flying.  It may be the 21st century, but disposable cameras are still out there and the underexposed pictures still look kind of awesome, especially when they’re taken at a music festival.  Take photos of the bands, your friends, and whatever weird people/things you come across, and hang them in your room so the memories last forever.  Awww.  Fujifilm to the rescue!

There you have it, ladies.  You’re good to go for festival season, so have the most fun for me, okay?  And keep an eye out in the coming weeks for MORE festival essentials!

The remaining members of the band have released an official (yet vague) statement about Deal’s departure:

We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.

The departure sounds amicable, though a bit sad, and we’re glad to know that Deal’s welcome back to the Pixies if she ever decides to return.  The band hasn’t released any music since a song in 2004, but were active touring in 2011, leaving hope for new material, whether it be recorded or live.  There is no word of another breakup or hiatus, so we’ll be keeping an eye out to see if Deal is replaced in the near future.

Kim Deal is still active in The Breeders, an alt-rock band with her sister, Kelley.  The band is currently on tour in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Last Splash.

We’ll miss you, Kim!  We hope to see you reunited with the Pixies again one day in the future.
