Good news, rap lovers: Childish Gambino has just released his sophomore album, “Because The Internet!” An obvious nod to today’s technology-obsessed society (and a high-five to his target audience), Gambino wows with intricate rhymes in tracks that range from aggressive bangers to smooth ballads. If you’re feeling confrontational, check out “IV. sweatpants,” which perfectly captures Gambino’s ability to praise himself (as he has every right to), with a chorus of “Don’t be mad cause I’m doing me better than you doing you.” He makes no assumptions about where he’s from, spitting, “My father owned half of MoMA, and he did it with no diploma / Year off, got no rules, tripping off them toadstools / More green than my Whole Foods and I’m too fly, Jeff Goldblum.” Also take a listen to “The Party,” a steady track with hints of gospel and soul, and “Shadows,” reminiscent of early 2000’s Jay-Z. Well done, Gambino, so much for that “Sophomore Slump!”
