Throw on your drug rug, pop some acid, and get ready for the trip of a lifetime – King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are back with a brand new video for their track, “Hot Wax,” and it is something else! The eighth track off of their fourth album, “Oddments,” “Hot Wax” is an exploration into the depths of psychedelia, channeling the likes of Frank Zappa and Kim Fowley with the song’s near childlike tune and simplistic lyrics. The video is a brilliant cornucopia of cartoonish imagery that will launch viewers into the deepest depths of space, only to come crashing back to earth after the chaos dies down. Frontman Stu Mackenzie‘s face literally melts off (ours does too, but that might just be the acid,) while he croons among dancing candles and wandering hands, and it couldn’t be more brilliantly terrifying. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are back with the brand new face melter, “Head On/Pill.” “Head On/Pill” is a 16 minute journey broken up between two psychedelic fueled passages. The track starts off slow and spaced out before mutating into an all out manic monster for the rest of the song. If you ever wanted to know what it feels like to travel through wormholes, this is your best bet. King Gizzard have showcased a lot of versatility in their songwriting, where their last album, Eyes Like The Sky was basically the soundtrack to a spaghetti western film. If “Head On/Pill” is any indication of things to come, then I’m all on board.

Their third album Float Along – Fill Your Lungs, which includes “Head On/Pill,” is set to release sometime later this year.

The always hard working Arctic Monkeys just released a new single today called “Do I Wanna Know?” Most likely to be released on an album later this year. “Do I Wanna Know?” takes cues from desert rock and psychedelic rock, sounds the band have previously experimented with in the past, but now quite seem comfortable with. The video reflects such sound with warping animated images and oscillation lines.

Portland, 1991.

You step off the bus that took you from your waitressing job in downtown Seattle into your cool, rebellious older sister’s arms.  After she left home at 17, you haven’t managed to see her much, but she insisted you come down to Portland this weekend to see her friend’s band play.  She gives you a welcoming hug, smelling of dust and stale beer, and excitedly grabs your bag before pulling you along to her old, beat up, faded green Volvo Station Wagon, tearing off into traffic like a bat out of hell.  She explains that the show you both are going to is in an old warehouse on the outskirts of town, and that you have to haul ass if you want to get there in time.

Pulling up to the venue with a six-pack of PBR and throw on your favorite red flannel overshirt before making your way inside. Stepping into the warehouse, your senses are immediately overwhelmed with the scent of cigarette smoke with a hint of whiskey, and you somehow manage to wiggle your way through the crowd to just the right of the stage, where your sister introduces you to the band.  You look into the eyes of Ryan Granger, a scraggly-looking (yet, still mysteriously attractive) fellow with a friendly smile that looks suspiciously like an angsty lumberjack, and his bandmate, Whitney Petty, an stunning brunette who perfectly channels the “cheerleader gone bad” look with her shit-kicker boots and kiss-my-ass attitude. They say nothing, only giving you a nod before taking the stage in silence.

The second the duo takes the stage, silence falls over the room, the normally-rowdy crowd tense with anticipation.  Ryan forgoes any introduction and rips into their first track, “Midnight Sun,” a powerful, rhythm-heavy blues-rock piece that makes the crowd bang their heads in unison. “Midnight Sun” is followed by “Stuck In My Head,” a more upbeat, danceable track that you already feel yourself singing days from now.  The Grizzled Mighty keep their listeners attention with the melodic “Mona Lisa,” before launching into “Smooth,” a guitar-heavy song with guitar solos that stun the crowd, and drumming that makes you wonder how her kit is still standing. Ryan and Whitney finish off their short set with the memorable, riff-heavy track, “Get Your Way,” which solidifies the choice that you’ve been thinking about all night:

In what seems like an unlikely pairing, UK psychedelic band, TOY and songstress Natasha Khan aka Bat For Lashes came together on the track “The Bride.” The tracks is the 3rd session in a series for Speedy Wunderground, where each month a new artist will perform in their studio.

According to the press release, “The Bride” is a ” re-working of Iranian song “Aroos Khanom” by Amir Rassaie from the record “Funk, Psychedelia and Pop from the Iranian Pre-Revolution Generation.” After Natasha dropped into the studio and heard TOY’s re-work, she fell in love and re-worked the lyrics after they were translated into English. The end result is something quite interesting, and I would be so up for a collab album from both artists. A 60s middle eastern psychedelic inspired album, anyone?

On July 1st, the track will be available as a limited edition of 250 7” and features a dub version of the track, ‘Here Comes Dub Bride’ on the B-Side. Check out the track below.

Bad news, Bonnaroo fans: Mumford and Sons have officially announced the cancellation of their headlining performance due to the surgery that bassist Ted Dwayne underwent earlier this week for a blood clot in his brain.  The band’s just-release statement reads:

Dear friends,

It is with great joy that we can announce that Ted has been discharged from hospital and is on the road to a full recovery. The surgery went well, and the excellent medical team helping him are very pleased with his progress. He has been nothing short of heroic in how he has handled the whole ordeal, and now it has been medically proved that he does indeed have a brain.

Today, however, also marks the end of our Summer Stampede Tour. We were hoping to have made it out by Bonnaroo this weekend. But it is with sadness that we have to announce the cancellation of our scheduled performances at both Bonnaroo and Telluride Festivals, and our show at Cricket Wireless Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, KS. If we could’ve we would’ve, you know that about us. We trust that you can respect our collective desire to encourage Ted to make a full recovery, and that this is based purely on the medical advice we have received.

On behalf of Ted, and all of us really, we would like to thank every one for their compassion and support at this time and we are very excited to get back out on tour as soon as we can.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra recently appeared on BBC’s radio program 6Music With Marc Riley, where the band performed a live cover of Otis Redding’s classic “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” UMO’s take on it is nearly faithful to the original, with Ruben’s bluesy vocals and just enough of UMO’s psych sound to mix it up a bit. Smith Westerns just posted “Idol,” a new track off their upcoming album Soft Will. “Idol” is the third track they shared off of that album following “Varsity” and “3AM Spiritual.” “Idol” sounds like it could have easily been ripped from a John Hughes soundtrack.

Soft Will is set to drop June 25 via Mom + Pop in the U.S. and June 24 via Co-Op in Europe.

Today Ernest Greene aka Washed Out released the first cut from his upcoming album Paracosm. The track is called “It All Feels Right” the second track off the album. “It All Feels Right” is a welcome change from previous Washed Out material, with it’s cleaner sound while still retaining Ernest’s signature airy, distanced vocals. According to a press release, the album is set to feature 50 different instruments throughout, and you can tell from “It All Feels Right” that a lot of layers are being added to each track (is that a Mellotron?).

Paracosm releases on August 12 via Weird World in the U.K., and August 13 via Sub Pop in the U.S. That is the artwork above.
