Queens, New York hard grunge three-piece Dead Waves is back to melt faces with their new single, “Oracles of the Grave!” Produced by Steve Albini (Nirvana’s In Utero), “Oracles of the Grave” is the first we’ve heard from Dead Waves since their stellar 2013 EP, “Take Me Away,” and sees the bands already heavy sound get impossibly darker. Recorded in Albini’s Electrical Audio Studio in Chicago, Dead Waves begin the track with steady, unrelenting guitars before blasting into a chorus of head-banging worthy percussion. Vocalist Teddy Panopolous gives the track all he’s got, treating listeners to his distinctive signature wail that would make Kurt Cobain roll over in his grave. Los Angeles four-piece, Washing Machines, have just released their new “Quick Fix EP” via Summer Bummer Records, and it’s full of top-notch, fuzzy, grungy goodness. Kicking off with “Big Cyst,” Washing Machines channel the likes of Sonic Youth and early Nirvana with raw, combative instrumentals and gravely vocals. “Big Cyst” can be described as aggressively blase`, with frontman Lucas Pearl growling out, “I don’t really know and I don’t really care, all I wanna do is stare stare stare…”

Next up is the surf-infused “Vaseline,” a combination of the chaotic sounds of The Stooges infused with the tiniest bit of the beachy vibes of Best Coast.  Repeated, demanding lyrics make “Vaseline” perfect for a mosh pit anthem, with Pearl seething, “what I want is to be real!” The stand-out track will have you jamming in no time, and is the perfect transitional tune to split the album.

Lastly is “SONIC FUCK,” a predictably pissed-off track ripe with reberb-distorted guitars, crashing drums, and near-whining vocals. “SONIC FUCK” is dirty, gritty, and almost violent ending to a consistent release, and we can’t wait to hear more!

Pop quiz time! What do you get when you mix citrus, Pixies, and early White Stripes?

If you said Lemonbait, you’d be right! The teenage alt-rockers released their EP back in October, and we’re kicking ourselves for just finding it now! The album kicks off with “Shiver,” a Bleach-era Nirvana-sounding track with the vocals that would make Jack White proud. Next up is “Trying To Read,” a melancholy track about regrets and dealing with consequences. “I’ll be so old,” frontman Sam croons, “that I didn’t know that I’ve lost my mind, and I can’t rewind…” He speaks of hesitation and of what could have been, all while maintaining scratchy, spot-on vocals, and it’s BEAUTIFUL. “Waking Still” sees Lemonbait go in a decidedly dreary direction, channeling a sleepy Breeders with vocals that blend into the background just a tiiiiiny bit too much. Following “Waking Still” is “Outside,” which embraces a more pop-punk sound, before blasting into “Why Think,” a tune with a Clash-meets-Mudhoney vibe that will have you nodding your head in no time. “In Mind” takes the EP’s mood down a bit, with slow, strumming guitars intermingling with fuzzy, faded vocals. “Cold” is a pure cry for help, with Sam wailing, “oh, help me when I’m feelin’ cold, I couldn’t find her and I’m gettin’ old…” Wrapping up the album is “Keeping Steep,” an unusually simplistic track with soft drums and near twangy guitars that bring “Lemonbait” to a nice soft close. Are you feeling particularly aggressive today? Are you fed up with people and the world in general? Great news! So are Dead Waves, the delightfully screamy NYC-based trio, and they’ve just released their new “Take Me Away” EP on Bandcamp! “Take Me Away” opens with “Planet of Tribes,” a rabble-rousing track that makes you feel like you’re getting stomped on in the middle of a mosh pit, before settling down for “Over Me,” that has a gritty, grungy feel.  “Over Me” would make Kurt Cobain proud, crunchy guitars nearly overpowering downer lyrics.  Following “Over Me” is “Instead,” a Melvins-inspired tune with distorted guitars reminiscent of early Riot Grrrl tracks, ala “Rebel Girl” by Bikini Kill. “Anomaly” and “Which Way” both scream Dead Kennedys, and will leave you reeling and out of breath. Lastly, “Big Fish” alternates between roaring guitars that enhance it’s aggressive chorus and soft verses for the thinker in  you. Overall, Dead Waves succeed in bringing back the glory days of grunge, and are well on their way to being stars. You can download the full EP here.

Everyone’s favorite Canadian crooner, Mac DeMarco stopped by the A.V. Club‘s office to perform a very special version of Weezer’s “Undone – The Sweater Song.” A.V. Club’s “A.V. Undercover” pairs indie artists with unlikely covers, and end they end up with pretty entertaining results. Mac DeMarco is no stranger to unlikely cover songs as his cover of Nirvana’s “Come As You Are” suggests. On covering Weezer, DeMarco said it was “Very chill, probably easier than covering another song.” Check out the cover for yourself below.

On this day in 1967, grunge God Kurt Cobain was born in Aberdeen, Washington.  Cobain, along with his legendary band Nirvana became the voice of the generation for legions of people disenchanted by the excess of the 80’s and spearheaded the grunge rock movement into the mainstream.  After having unfathomable success with his heartfelt lyrics, incredible guitar playing, and self-depreciating demeanor, Cobain, who had struggled with depression and addiction throughout his short life, finally succumbed to his demons and committed suicide at the tender age of 27.  He would have been 46 today, and left behind a wife, young daughter, and millions of devastated fans, but his legacy lives on through his timeless music.  Rock on, Kurt, Heaven must sound great.
