2013 was certainly an incredible year for pop music! Songs from certified greats like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake topped the charts (per usual,) all while giving way to some more recent editions like Lorde and One Direction. Without further ado, here are the Top 10 Pop Songs of 2013:

Miley: I want everything attention-grabbing and provocative in the world that’s ever made parents angry.
Everyone else: OKAY.

Aaand that’s how we ended up with a video featuring smoke-shooting crotches and strutting with stuffed animals (some of which were alive at one point).  And obviously some girl-on-girl wrestling/grabbing.

I know, Lucille, I know.

Cyrus pops in her golden grills and sensually humps her white duvet so we know she’s ready to party, as friends eat money sandwiches and slice off their fingers in what I hope was supposed to be an excessively fake stunt, pink paint blood aside.  Twerking is never absent for too long, whether it’s appearing in alphabet soup, or in one of the 82375 shots we are given of Miley’s ass (in case we forgot she had one or something).  She also sticks her tongue out at us when it’s not being stuck down the throat of a doll.  What a rebel!  Hannah Montana, who?

PEOPLE DON’T FORGET.

The most confusing part of it all for me is that the song itself is just not that exciting.  A video like this should be accompanied by a real club banger, and “We Can’t Stop” is anything but that.  Anyway, I’m clearly not impressed with Miley’s try-hard antics or attitude, but it’s not like she can stop, you know?  Plus, I don’t think she wants to.

I have never met an Ellie Goulding cover that I didn’t end up replaying over and over again. With some of her more recent covers being Active Child’s “Hanging On” and The Weeknd’s “High For This”, Alt-J’s “Tessellate” may be one of the best covers Goulding has done so far.

Goulding worked with producer Xaphoon Jones, who also produced her “High For This” cover, to help create the toned-down, R&B, minimalistic version of the original electro-rock tune. Her ethereal soprano vocals float over the stripped down beat, with a jazzy feel given by a quick saxophone breakdown in the middle of the song. In addition to Goulding’s atmospheric cover, she released a black and white music video to accompany the song. Goulding’s vocal cover and music video are distinctively different than the original “Tessellate”, but that hasn’t seemed to bother anybody. The band members of Alt-J recognize Goulding’s cover as a “spiritual sequel” to their song and video, with a certain special raunchiness of Goulding’s own.

With Discos Balls and Bright Lights you’d think someone had just pulled out a VHS of a music video from decades ago.

Bruno Mars’ new music video for “Treasure” is a retro spacey although predictable video that makes it seem like the video was really shot in the 70s. From the first listen to “Treasure” it was pretty obvious the music video would be very retro. Even though it was predictable what else do you expect from disco number from Bruno Mars’ himself.

The music video is a direct take from when Mars’ performed the song at the Billboard Music Awards with the choreography and everything. In the middle of the video Bruno Mars and his band even take us into space along with the lead female. It was an interesting video that would summarize the song of the song perfectly. This video looks like it was taken straight from “Soul Train” or any type of show like that in the 70s.

Heidemann lightly discussed the song:

‘Acapella’ was created almost exclusively with human voices…We flipped the original meaning of Acapella to mean ‘D.I.Y.’ or should we say ‘D.I.A. – Do It Acapella!

The song may be “almost exclusively” acapella, but that doesn’t mean it’s a slow crooner.  It’s still fun and beckons listeners to sing along via Heidemann’s phrasing, similar to the duo’s single, “Brokenhearted,” but with a much funkier, unique sound.  She sings about life/love lessons from her parents, and how money doesn’t matter when “the harmony goes fallin’ out of key.”  The lyric video features the silhouettes of Heidemann and bandmate Nick Noonan singing, dancing, and messing around with an assortment of props, and has left me wondering, yet again, just how intricate lyric videos can get until they’re just straight-up music videos.

A young girl with curly blonde locks sits next to a boy with shaggy red hair on the bus as the song begins.  HMMM, I wonder who they could represent?  At least Swift has finally found a fitting way to visually manifest her infamous immaturity.  What’s that?  The children in the video are mature beyond their years?  Welp.

We see the two cuties latch onto one another throughout daily school activities, including gym class and band class, as pictured above.  But seriously, they’re off to the side during gym doing yoga by themselves.  THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN.  Speaking of things that don’t happen, if you find yourself beginning to feel jealous of the young couple’s relationship, just remember that elementary school aged boys do NOT (or cannot) read The Notebook in real life.

Yeah, you guys did it better.

So, do the present day Swift and Sheeran even appear in their own video?  Guess you’ll have to watch and see.

 Here comes Little Mix! Little Mix broke a Spice Girls record this week by becoming the highest debut ever for a Female British Group. Way to go ladies, girl empowerment all the way. This young group has come on to the scene bringing in the debut of their new album “DNA” at NO. 4 on the billboard 200 chart. Little Mix song “Wings” is catchy and is becoming one of the songs you don’t even realizing you’re humming in the car.  Roll the windows down and start singing away or get a video up with you and some friends singing on the top of your lungs.

Little Mix will make their debut on U.S television on Friday (June 7^th) on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Their debut will be a part of the show’s annual Summer Concert Series. Will they come swooping in and make an impact such as the Spice Girls. All we can do is waiting and see. It’s their time to fly!

Blige!  In a stunning display of girl power this past weekend at the “Chime for Change” concert, the Bronx natives wowed with a performance of The Beatles classic, “Come Together.”  Chime for Change is:

Beyonce, the charitable woman that she is, decided to let the audience participate in singing the beginning of her hit, “Irreplaceable.”  She held her microphone up to a fan’s face as he sang “to the right, to the right.”

Beyonce laughed off the incorrect lyrics, brushing it off with an “alright, Boo Boo.”  But when she turned around to continue the performance, the inappropriately bold fan slapped her backside.  Beyonce handled the incident in a royal manner, telling the fan that she would “have him escorted out of here” before continuing the song.  Her servants security escorted the man out of the concert right away.

Hopefully this discourages other handsy fans to not take any chances at their upcoming Bey concerts…you know, if “sexual harassment” wasn’t reason enough.
