Naming an album “Beautiful Things” is a very risky move. God forbid the record is less than stellar, and you’re in for a bad time with reviews.

Luckily, San Francisco-based electronic duo KAT HAUS’s new album, “Beautiful Things,” is AAAAAAMAZING.

“Beautiful Things” kicks off with “Waves,” a dreamy synth-heavy track about escaping a disturbed conscience. “Your body is a shelter from my troubled mind,” KAT HAUS sings, before dropping into a techy chorus that sounds right out of Tron. Next up is “Soul 2 Soul,” a soft track embracing light, airy vocals, before fading into the EP’s title track. “Beautiful Things” is a stand-out track, the poetic lyrics blending perfectly with a steady, 80s-influenced beat. “Don’t try to hold the precious things, nor try to grasp the song they sing” they croon, “You feel me like the wind that blows, so why not just try and let it go?” Keep an ear out for the unexpectedly aggressive ending, when a hard techno breakdown takes over! “Familiar” is a delightfully spacey tune with a strong, heavy bassline that accompanies dreamy vocals. With a rhythm reminiscent of Lorde’s “Glory & Gore,” KAT HAUS will have you hooked on this hypnotic track in no time. “Beautiful Things” wraps up with “Hold You,” which will have you tripping with it’s operatic vocals, and eerie, echoed stylings. Do you still have a Corey Haim poster on your bedroom wall? Have you completed the Rubik’s Cube? Just can’t part with those leg warmers? Feeling cinematically lost without any hope of a new John Hughes film? Calm down, Principles of Geometry’s Meanstream will help you get through your 80’s withdrawal.

Meanstream is the fourth full-length album from French duo Jeremy Duval and Guillaume Grosso. True to Electronic Music form, the duo ambiguously refers to themselves as J & G. The two met in a recording studio while both working as sound engineers. Since then they have been creating heavy synthesized sounds and captivating grooves.

Meanstream particularly has an impossible to ignore 80’s motif. Some sounds feel like they are directly yanked out of an 80’s film soundtrack. Principles of Geometry’s greatest quality is their ability to create a strong retro style, while crafting their music with a modern technique. This wily fusion makes listeners feel transported without over saturation of antiquated tones or crappy drum machines. Some sounds on Meanstream have a warped or grainy tone to them as if they were created from old synthesizers, but therein lies the genius in them. In an age where we’re constantly trying to craft a better and better quality of sound, Meanstream purposely takes another road. Meanstream will drag you out just far enough to know you’re in some kind of time warp, but will eventually ground you with the contemporary.

Meanstream is crafted almost cinematically. The opening track is a prologue, beginning with ambient sounds and distant electronic drums. The track is accompanied by a woman’s voice describing an opening scene in a film….very Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Nonetheless, the album begins to set a tone for the listener. Yes, the cheese factor is there, but Meanstream doesn’t take itself too seriously. One notable track on the album is Streamsters. The track is constructed as a legitimate song, not just a moving electronic soundscape. There is falsetto singing and an almost tropical vibe. Pretty much Don Johnson in a full white suit.

If you’re looking for something a bit more ambient and emotional, Roanoke is the track for you. This track in particular sounds most like it’s the backing track for an angsty teen 80’s movie, but still, very cool. The track Polysex is closer to EDM as we know it today, but it does mess with snippets of sampled sounds that make predicting the next move impossible. There are many themes to this track. The slow groove and layered vocals create a synthesized R&B feel. Another shining moment of the album is Runner. What makes this track special is how it’s composed. It has a slow tempo with vintage sounds, but the meter of the song erratically changes throughout. It appears as though the song suddenly speeds up without warning, yet the tempo stays the same for the entirety of the song. This entire album is very 80’s, but Runner is as 80’s as it gets. Naturally, the album closes with an epilogue, letting you know that this artistically crafted sound experience has concluded.

I recommend Meanstream for the EDM lover who wants something a little different. When a constant, immovable bass beat and the ever-predictable “drop” just doesn’t do it for you anymore, take a listen to Principles of Geometry.

Let’s take a trip to Laurel Canyon sometime in the late 1960’s. There is yet a vessel to take us there, but at least our ears can make the journey. Triptides’ new EP, Colors is a serious call back to the sprawling sounds of the flower generation. Psychedelic, warm waves of sound encapsulate the entire feel of the album. The album was recorded in Lo-fi, making the nostalgia truly genuine. The band, Glenn Brigman- guitar, Josh Menashe- guitar, Dylan Sizemore- bass, and Josh Morrow- drums, describe their genre as Psychedelic Dreamrock. The band has a handful of previous singles with two full albums, Sun Pavilion (2012) and Predictions (2013).

The flow of the EP works very well. The opening track, Colors, makes you feel as if you’re cursing down California’s Pacific Coast Highway with the top down heading to catch some killer waves. That’s pretty impressive for four kids from Bloomington, Indiana. The first track sets the stage for the rest of the EP. You’re going to know right away if you dig Triptides’ style or not. There is nothing ambiguous about Triptides’ music, no grand gestures. They are all about steady, old fashioned, rock and roll with a touch of the experimental. Besides the opening track, another highlight of the album is Throne of Stars. The bass line is reminiscent of The Monkees in their heyday. The track gets a bit heavier near the middle with darker ambient sounds while the guitar travels into a minor key only momentarily. Then the song finds itself back into the opening feel, accompanied by the classic “ooo”s and “ahhh”s of the kaleidoscopic style. The EP ends with a slower, introspective track appropriately named Lullaby. This track is a great way to ease off that trip you just took with its mellow tone and almost hypnotizing vocal delivery. Most the album is recorded with distant sounding vocals and soft echoes from the guitar making the EP a bit of a time warp.

Staying true to their retro approach, the band has made limited addition cassettes for the album that includes a high quality download of the EP in the digital format of your choice. These cassettes are a fun novelty item a smart marketing tool for the band. Although, staying true to form, the band should probably be making an eight-track tape for this EP.

Coming to us straight from the stars (or BandCamp, whatever), is Hello Observers, who just released their debut, self-titled album on BandCamp for exactly $0!  The album kicks off with “This Is Happening,” an chiming intergalactic jam sprinkled with hints of tribal influence. “Crawler” shows a darker side to Hello Observers, with a strong drop that will blast out your speakers before fading into “Let’s Flow.” “Nerves Of The Heavenly Body” is one of the album’s stand-out tracks, masterfully layering countless complex rhythms, genres, and melodies to create a uplifting futuristic track with hit potential.  “Apophenia Swamp” is one of the album’s most aggressive tracks, sounding like a toned-down Skrillex without the rage-your-face-off hook. “Wreckage” brings down the record’s tone with a contemplative sound before blasting into “Lunar Tribe Rain Dance,” a far-out tune that will leave you chilled out to the max. “I Feel Weird” is another standout track: nearly overwhelming in it’s intensity, Hello Observers throw everything they’ve got. The Jetson’s-esque intro intermingles beautifully with the near combative bass, before tinkling bells float over and take your home. Wrapping up the album is “Hive Mind,” a blend of orchestral and ambient sounds, before concluding with the short and sweet “What Just Happened?” Overall, Hello Observers is certainly a name to watch out for – they are truly out of this world!

For those of you that have been navigating stormy seas lately, allow us gift you with an escape: Seabound, (Frank Spinath & Martin Vorbrodt,) have just released their new album, “Speak In Storms!” The record is the group’s first in over eight years, and features an superb mix of club, electro, dance, and dubstep that will have you jamming in record time. “Speak In Storms” catches ears from the very first track, “For Life,” a spacey tune riddled with eery echoes from beyond. The album’s catchy-ness continues onto it’s second track, “Contraband,” a song sounding like a twisted blend of Zeds Dead and early Schiller. In between a steady yet infectious rhythm are floating vocals asking, “Of what are you innocent? You carry contraband into my mind as if you couldn’t kill me dead enough…” The lyrics will leave you stunned into silence as Seabound whisks you away on a journey that balances between heartbreak and revenge, and it’s masterful! Finally, make sure to check out “Liar,” a borderline track that combines elements of rock into a catchy techno jam. The ups and downs of the instrumentals pair with Seabound’s flawless vocals, making for an out of this world experience that, like the album, will leave you breathless. Well done!

Before you get too calm, tracks like the circus-inspired “Pandoras Box” will have you on the edge of your seat with anticipation. As the song’s tempo slowly rises, you will be biting your nails, before it drops hard into a deeply placid, yet somehow child-like feel. In a recent interview with LessThan3.com, 2/3 Krewella members, Yasmine and Kris, were asked to describe their sound in three words. Yasmine replied, “wet, dark, hard,” while Kris said, “heavy, fun, melodic,” and they could not have said it better! The album mixes multiple different genres and vocal styles to create a truly unique blend of bass-heavy EDM that will get any party started in no time.  Kicking off Krewella’s celebration is “Live For The Night,” a poppy anthem that you’ll be singing for days, before diving into harder, club-ready tracks like “Dancing With The Devil,” “This Is Not The End,” and “Human.” Previously-released filler tracks are the always-great “Killin’ It,” “Come And Get It,” and “Alive,” and provide the perfect contrast to the new softer sound of songs like “Pass The Love Around,” “We Go Down,” and “Enjoy The Ride.”

Yasmine sums up “Get Wet” perfectly: “Get Wet is clearly just BOOM, sexual in your face, that’s how many people take it. But how I want people to take it is in a different way. You’re getting wet, you’re jumping in, like when you jump into a pool wearing all your clothes, you’re just letting loose, you’re just kind of letting go, you’re doing something you’ve never done, you’re being free, you’re being a kid no matter how old you are.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

Swedish duo Icona Pop have just released their peppy new album via Atlantic’s Big Beat records, and it’s sure to get the party started! The album jumps right into the smash hits, with the first two tracks being “I Love It” and “All Night.” Following the bangers comes the dance-ready tracks, “We Got The World” and “Ready For The Weekend” before the pair unleash a surprise cover of Tupac’s “Girlfriend,” which garners “awww’s” from all corners. Icona Pop turns down the volume for the surprisingly soft “In The Stars,” crooning, “Skies open, where we going? / It’s in the stars, it’s who we are / Don’t you worry about the morning / It’s in the stars, it’s who we are.” They breifly bring back the fast beats in “On A Roll” before getting deep once again on the stunning “Just Another Night,” where they contemplate life changes, saying “Stepping over cracks in the pavement, another night of being wasted/Staring at your name, staring at your name.” It’s undoubtedly a different direction than listeners are used to, but one that’s absolutely worth a listen nonetheless. The album wraps up with the trio-of-catchy, “Hold On,” “Light Me Up,” and “Then We Kiss,” all party anthems with a contemplative twist.

Icona Pop recently told Interview Magazine, “Our album is not going to be like 12 tracks that are going to sound exactly similar. It’s going to be very different. You can hear the journey that we’ve been through.”

That journey certainly sounds amazing. Well done!

After a long four years touring, Shpongle, the psychedelic musical project by the UK’s Simon Posford and Raja Ram, is back and better than ever with their new album, “Museum of Consciousness!” Shpongle, which has been said to be an “umbrella term for feeling positive or euphoric emotions,” certainly lives up to it’s definition, with all seven tracks managing to reel you in and improve your mood from the very first note.

“Museum of Consciousness'” first track, “Brain In A Fish Tank,” is a fascinating mix of tribal beats, sounds from nature, and futuristic synths, all providing the perfect background to the seemingly randomly placed vocals.  “Brain In A Fish Tank” is followed by the over 10 minute long “How The Jellyfish Jumped Up The Mountain,” a hypnotic blend of heavy bass, manipulated vocals, and trippy drops that will take you on the journey of a lifetime.  The next track, “Juggling Molecules” has an obvious rushed feel to it, the beats noticeably faster before dropping into “The Aquatic Garden Of Extra-Celestial Delights,” which delves back into Shpongle’s always-adored ambient mood with a hint of Bollywood. The nearly 12 minute “Extra-Celestial Delights” is like watching a thriller on the big screen: muted and dormant until the middle, where the track comes to its climax before simmering back down.

Up next is the video game inspired “Further Adventures In Shpongleland,” the eery dripping beat that carries the track making the listener uneasy. Following “Further Adventures In Shpongleland” comes the truly epic “The Epiphany Of Mrs Kugla,” which sounds like an adventurous soundtrack with its clever use of horns and classical strings.  The album’s final track is “Tickling The Amygdala,” a combination of all genres, instruments, and stylistic elements of the songs before it, providing the perfect end to a truly incredible album. “Museum of Consciousness” is out now!
