It’s been nearly two years since one of the world’s most promising young stars, Amy Winehouse, died. The talented songstress shocked the world in 2011 by becoming the newest member of the infamous “27 Club,” joining the greats like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, on the great stage in the sky, due to alcohol poisoning. While the public is undoubtedly still recovering from her sudden departure, Winehouse lovers can now officially look forward to the release of a documentary about the star, set to premeire at the Cannes Film Festival this year. The film, which is as of now, still untitled, is being produced by Universal Music, Asif Kapadia, and James Gay-Rees, who say:
“This is an incredibly modern, emotional and relevant film that has the power to capture the zeitgeist and shine a light on the world we live in in a way that very few films can. Amy was a once-in-a-generation talent who captured everyone’s attention; she wrote and sung from the heart, and everyone fell under her spell. But tragically, Amy seemed to fall apart under the relentless media attention, her troubled relationships, her global success and precarious lifestyle. As a society we celebrated her huge success, but then we were quick to judge her failings when it suited us.”
While it is going to be understandably difficult to capture the true beauty of Amy Winehouse’s voice, spirit, and legacy, I have no doubt that this documentary do her justice. Love you, Amy!
