Throw on your drug rug, pop some acid, and get ready for the trip of a lifetime – King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are back with a brand new video for their track, “Hot Wax,” and it is something else! The eighth track off of their fourth album, “Oddments,” “Hot Wax” is an exploration into the depths of psychedelia, channeling the likes of Frank Zappa and Kim Fowley with the song’s near childlike tune and simplistic lyrics. The video is a brilliant cornucopia of cartoonish imagery that will launch viewers into the deepest depths of space, only to come crashing back to earth after the chaos dies down. Frontman Stu Mackenzie‘s face literally melts off (ours does too, but that might just be the acid,) while he croons among dancing candles and wandering hands, and it couldn’t be more brilliantly terrifying. The always hard working Arctic Monkeys just released a new single today called “Do I Wanna Know?” Most likely to be released on an album later this year. “Do I Wanna Know?” takes cues from desert rock and psychedelic rock, sounds the band have previously experimented with in the past, but now quite seem comfortable with. The video reflects such sound with warping animated images and oscillation lines.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra recently appeared on BBC’s radio program 6Music With Marc Riley, where the band performed a live cover of Otis Redding’s classic “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” UMO’s take on it is nearly faithful to the original, with Ruben’s bluesy vocals and just enough of UMO’s psych sound to mix it up a bit. Twin Wave, a fairly new act from Brooklyn, opened up the show with a psychedelic-pop set that inspired dancing throughout the crowd.  The songs were filled with falsetto, synth, and a whole lot of wah pedal.  With a mix of soul and ambient indie influence, Twin Wave was an opener that caught attention, rather than holding onto it for later acts.  I’d like to see this band again in a year or so, given more time to step out of the box with their sound and presence.

The Grizzled Mighty took the stage next, and the powerful two-piece took it by fiery storm.  I would like to compare them to The White Stripes, but after drummer Whitney Petty declared mid-set that The White Stripes can “suck her dick,” I figured I’d better not (but I sort of just did).  Petty, who played guitar in a little band called Deerhunter for a short while, certainly had enough energy and skill to prove herself as one not to be compared.  Ryan Granger completed the duo with his vocals and guitar,  easily producing crunchy riffs and frequent face-melting solos.  The Grizzled Mighty was pure rock ‘n’ roll, bluesy undertones and all.

The band’s music wasn’t the only thing emitting rock ‘n’ roll.  When Granger lost his balance and fell backwards onto the kick drum mid-song, neither he nor Petty skipped a beat, continuing on to the end of the song with a fallen cymbal stand.  Soon after, Petty’s rack tom fell over, also finding itself lost in the electrifying performance.  Again, the song continued without pause, and was met at the end with a crowd member declaring “that was awesome” as everyone cheered in agreement.

The Grizzled Mighty’s set was a rare surprise, as the same stellar performance could have easily been for a sold out crowd at an arena show.  You can check out a few pictures below, as well as a video from the end of the set.

Come on, everyone loves a good sister-band. These girls are a great example of  sisters collaborating with each other instead of competing like I do with my sister. Although, after watching that video, I wonder if they’re having a secret hair growing competition.
But anyway, hopefully performing on Letterman ups their status. Haim’s new album is said to be released this coming fall, and the single “Falling” is already out and available for download.

Today Ernest Greene aka Washed Out released the first cut from his upcoming album Paracosm. The track is called “It All Feels Right” the second track off the album. “It All Feels Right” is a welcome change from previous Washed Out material, with it’s cleaner sound while still retaining Ernest’s signature airy, distanced vocals. According to a press release, the album is set to feature 50 different instruments throughout, and you can tell from “It All Feels Right” that a lot of layers are being added to each track (is that a Mellotron?).

Paracosm releases on August 12 via Weird World in the U.K., and August 13 via Sub Pop in the U.S. That is the artwork above.

Gourley parts ways with his band only to run into Howerton, and the two soon find themselves with linked fingers laced with lightning.  Clocks tick and foxes decay (isn’t that clip in the opening of True Blood?), and the two are left with an uncanny resemblance to Gandalf, but with mental telepathy.  Why not?  There is a comical exchange of insults, an appearance by Rob McElhenney (of It’s Always Sunny), and talk of robot wars.  I don’t want to spoil the whole thing, and I’m pretty sure the words “robot wars” had you reeled in if nothing got the job done earlier.

Gauntlet Hair released the dark new video clip for their latest single “Human Nature.” The Ryan Ohm directed clip features the band walking/running through train stations and house parties in their native Chicago. They must also have some hand trauma, judging by their bloody hands.

“Human Nature” is the first single off Gauntlet Hair’s upcoming album, Stills coming out on July 16th via Dead Oceans.

The video, which was directed by Ryan Russell, features Crutchfield and her friends (including her twin sister, Allison, of the band Swearin’) at Waxahatchee Creek in Alabama (aaand now you know from where she picked up that crazy name).  Crutchfield plays her acoustic guitar for the camera on the dock between shots of the group jumping into the water, and out, thanks to post-production effects.  They laugh and squint in the sun, and it gives us that craving for the perfect weekend getaway at a lakeside cabin that teens always seem to have on television.  Even the dog is having his fair share of summer fun.
