Widely known as the founders of the 1990’s grunge movement and the voices of Generation X, Nirvana paved the way for minimalist rock bands everywhere in a time where excess was the name of the game. Forming out of Aberdeen, Washington in 1987 by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, Nirvana eventually paired up with drummer Dave Grohl and saw unexpected success with their smash hit, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” of their hit album, “Nevermind.”
Unfortunately, along with success, came excess, and the group saw its fair share of legal drama and drug use before their eventual demise after the suicide of lead singer, Kurt. Kurt, who had struggled with both drug addiction and clinical depression his entire life, found that fame was too much to handle, leaving behind a young daughter and millions of devastated fans. After the death of Cobain, Novoselic played with multiple other bands before leaving the music industry completely to try his hand at politics. Dave Grohl went on to have even more mainstream success after forming the Foo Fighters and taking part in rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, along with session work with artists such as Garbage, Killing Joke, Nine Inch Nails, Paul McCartney, David Bowie, The Prodigy, Slash, Iggy Pop, Juliette Lewis, Tenacious D, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and Lemmy.
While Nirvana’s professional career may have only lasted a short seven years, their legacy lives on to this day as the Gods of grunge and an inspiration to musicians everywhere.
